[Fans of experimental electronic music take note.] Candie Hank, aka Patric Catani, is no stranger to the electronic music scene, but he may be a stranger to electronic fans who aren't familiar with Puppetmastaz or the German band EC8OR. His latest album, Groucho Running, is an odd buffet of electronic styles ranging from breakcore to drum 'n' bass to a track that can be described as nothing other than straight booty beats (it's actually called "The Booty Bank" and is as ridiculous a song as the title would lead one to believe). Some of the stuff sounds like science fiction music, some like creepy funhouse music, and still other bits could be the soundtrack to a Charlie Chaplin film if the actor were still alive and making silent slapstick movies. Candie Hank is not just some guy fooling around with a Roland 808 and some samples - he's incredibly good at what he does. Each track shows a profound understanding of what makes one style of electronic music different from another, and that skill is really what makes the album work. Groucho Running is certainly bizarre, but it's also really impressive.
